How Homeowners Can Reduce the Risk of Drain and Sewer Clogs

March 1, 2019 Bathroom Repair No Comments
Flushing the toilet seems so mundane until the waste water backs up and starts spilling over the rim. Drain and sewer clogs can cause inconvenience, a smelly house, and even a noxious mess. Reducing or eliminating the risk of these clogs is the best way to keep them from happening.

How to Reduce the Risk of Clogs

drain and sewer clogsHere are some tips you can use to keep your drains and sewer pipes flowing freely:

  • Don’t flush anything but toilet paper. Feminine products, paper towels, gauze and cotton swabs don’t belong in the sewer lines. Even the so-called flushable wipes shouldn’t go down the drain because they don’t decompose fast enough.
  • Don’t put liquid wastes like grease, oil or paint down the drain. While they may flow down the drain, they can cause a sticky mess that can cause a clog further down the line.
  • Have a regular inspection of your drain pipes. Every few years, have a plumber use a camera to inspect the drain and sewer lines. This will give you evidence of whether your lines are in good shape or not.
  • Clean the drain and sewer pipes every few years. A plumber can use a routing tool to clear out any debris from the lines, keeping them running freely. The routing can also remove any stray plant roots that may have infiltrated the pipe.
  • Remove plants and trees from around the sewer line. Plant roots start out at microscopic levels. That makes it easy for them to fit into small cracks or openings along the pipe. As the root grows, however, it will start widening those openings, making them leak.
  • Get a maintenance plan for your plumbing. You can sign up with a plumbing company best plumber to inspect and keep your plumbing working smoothly. The plans can cover everything from the water heater and toilets to the drain and sewer lines.
